SULPHATE RESISTANT CONCRETE

Our General Use Concrete has a sulfate resistance blended into the cement and allows the concrete to resist sulfate attacks. The most common applications include: footings, piles, grade beams, Slabs on grade etc. Basically any application where the concrete would be in contact with the soil directly. You can use an SR concrete in the same applications as the past GU concrete was used in.

CONCRETE is made by mixing:

CEMENT

WATER

COARSE AND FINE AGGREGATES

ADMIXTURES (if required).

 

The aim is to mix these materials in measured amounts to make concrete that is easy to:

TRANSPORT

PLACE

 COMPACT

FINISH

 

and which will set, and harden, to give a strong and durable product.

The relative amount of each material (IE cement, water and aggregates) affects the properties of concrete product.

 It’s important to know what you are trying to achieve with the concrete.

Take These Steps To Reduce The Water/ Cement Ratio

  1. Use the stiffest mix possible.

  2. Use the largest size aggregate practical for the job.

                                                                               Hot Weather Concreting

 Fast setting - In hot weather concrete sets up exponentially faster. Setting can be delayed using a set retarding admixture.To reduce the total time between the start of placing and the start of curing material, have an adequate crew, materials and equipment.

Cooling Tips - Be sure the materials are cool prior to concreting. The following are some tips in cooling.

  • Dampen sub-grade thoroughly so the ground doesn't absorb water  out of the freshly placed concrete.

  • Periodically spray the forms, reinforcing steel and sub grade with water to keep them cool and to prevent absorption of water from the concrete.

  • Erecting  sunshades and wind barriers will help offset the effects of dry warm winds, low humidity winds or high temperatures. This will help protect the fresh concrete from stiffening or crusting and help minimize cracking, crazing and plastic shrinkage.  

 

Placing Concrete - ​ As concreting begins, vibrate or screed as soon as possible. After screeding, and as needed during floating and troweling, spray the surface of fresh concrete with an evaporation retarder  - to prevent crusting and plastic shrinkage. If evaporation retarder is not used, protect the surface from rapid drying by covering with poly (vapor barrier) or by fogging or misting. do not over vibrate or over finish the surface. Over finishing or over vibrating will cause more of the cement paste to rise to top. This  creates a chance of crazing cracking. 

 

Curing Concrete - Start curing concrete immediately after finishing. To help reduce the temperature build up from exposure to hot sunlight, ponding or use of a curing agent is recommended. Periodically spray water on outside of forms for effective cooling and curing. Curing and protection from start to finish should be continuous and uninterrupted until the concrete develops its strength. 

 

Note - its very important to incorporate cooling techniques in every facet of hot weather concreting. It is also best to not let the mixer truck stand in the sun. discharge the concrete as soon as possible when the truck arrives to site. Prolong mixing in hot weather increases temperature of the concrete which makes it set faster and shortens the finish and placing time.

 

CONCRETE ORDERING

WHEN ORDERING PRE-MIXED concrete you will need to tell the office:

Name and address for delivery

The use of the concrete (ie driveway, housing slab, commercial) The amount you need in cubic metres or Cubic Yards

The Class of the concrete. There are two classes that concrete can be supplied as: Normal Class and Special Class.

NORMAL CLASS CONCRETE has a strength grade with the corresponding characteristic strength of 20, 25, 30, 32 and 35  MPa at 28 days. The slump at the point of delivery should be 20 –120 mm (the normal being 100mm or 4 inch) and the maximum size of coarse aggregate should be 10, 14 or 20 mm. Normal class concrete is suitable for most purposes. For most domestic applications such as driveways and paths grade 25mpa and 30mpa are the common grades ordered.

SPECIAL CLASS CONCRETE is specified when you have additional or alternative requirements to those for normal class concrete, eg exposed aggregate, color pigments, a non-standard strength grade. Special class concrete will not always be available for all special class please allow for sufficient time to order the required special products.


How you want to place the concrete (eg pump, chute, wheelbarrow, etc).

Time of the first truckload and the time between truckloads.

There must be enough time to place and compact one load before the next arrives.

Any admixtures, such as fibres, you may want in the concrete, though this is normally left to the pre-mixed concrete supplier.

Always order more concrete (ie 10%) than you need to allow for construction variations and/or some wastage. Concrete is ordered in 0.5-yard increments.

Ensure you round up when ordering.
